Nepal 2003

In May 2003 I made a trip to Nepal and went trekking in the Himalaya with my friend Tim .  The trip was timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the first ascent of Mount Everest on May 29 1953 by Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay.  We actually made it to Everest base camp at 11am on May 29 2003 (Hillary summited at 11:30am)!

We left London on May 17th headed for Kathmandu.  After a day in Kathmandu we flew to Lukla, where we begin our trek.

We spent 15 days trekking and had a fabulous time.  Some of the highlights were: climbing Kala Pattar (18,000+ ft), meeting Reinhold Messner, crossing the Cho La mountain pass, climbing Gokyo Ri, visiting the monastery at Tengbouche and making it to Everest Base Camp for the golden jubilee.

We were very lucky with the weather and the monsoon arrived just as we were leaving.  You can check out some of the photos here.
